Abdominal wall hernias are weaknesses in the muscle of your abdominal wall. Often these occur around the umbilicus or groin or are related to previous abdominal surgeries. Previous incisions in the abdomen can lead to hernias if the muscle doesn’t heal properly. These can occur shortly after surgery or months to years later. Morbidly obese patients are at increased risk of abdominal wall hernia formation after surgery. Dr. Weiss will address any abdominal wall hernias at the time of your bariatric surgery at his discretion – he may decide not to repair the hernia or he may repair the hernia, possibly with mesh.
