One area of Dr. Weiss’ expertise is anti-reflux surgery. This is not a bariatric surgery or weight loss procedure. It is a minimally invasive (laparoscopic or robotic) surgery to address patients with hiatal hernias and/or severe gastroesophageal reflux disease. The most common anti-reflux procedure Dr. Weiss performs is called a Nissen Fundoplication. This minimally invasive operation is very effective in eliminating even severe reflux symptoms and works immediately. During this minimally invasive surgical procedure, Dr. Weiss makes a few tiny incisions on the abdomen and uses a small video camera and instruments to repair your hiatal hernia (possibly with biologic mesh) and then wrap the top of your stomach around itself to create a valve to prevent reflux. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and takes about an hour. Patients are ambulating that day, get liquids, and can usually go home heartburn free the next day. Patients can usually return to work and resume full activities in about a week.
